A mother and son were found dead in the aftermath of a mobile home fire in Queen Anne’s County on Wednesday, according to the state fire marshal.

A school bus driver called 911 after he saw flames at the residence located at 504 Fox Meadow Road in Queen Anne around 2 p.m., fire officials said.

Firefighters from the Queen Anne-Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department and surrounding units arrived and extinguished the flames. Firefighters later discovered the remains of a man and woman.

The victims were identified as Margarete Brown, 83, and her son, Larry Brown, 63, according to fire officials.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct a formal investigation into the cause and manner of the deaths.

Family members told investigators that the victims had purchased a kerosene heater the day before to replace an older unit, according to the Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff. Fire marshals reportedly uncovered seven kerosene heaters among the debris during the investigation.

Investigators are trying to determine how many of those heaters were in use and functioning.
